Development Milestones
GEN I: E30 M3
The E30 M3 debuts as a track homologation special, introducing the legendary race-bred S14 naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine and lightweight wide-body aerodynamics that established the M3 nameplate as an instant motorsport icon.
GEN II: E36 M3
Re-engineered from the ground up, the E36 brought the first silky-smooth 24-valve straight-six S50 powerplant to the M3 family. Combined with sophisticated chassis balance and grand-touring refinements, it transformed the M3 into a global performance benchmark.
GEN III: E46 M3
Widely celebrated as the gold standard of M design. The E46 combined a muscular, widened body with the legendary S54 naturally-aspirated straight-six engine. Delivering a metallic, screaming 8,000 RPM rasp, it represents raw driver feedback at its finest.
GEN IV: E92 M3
The E92 completely re-engineered M3 capabilities by introducing the roaring S65 V8—a high-revving masterpiece derived directly from BMW Formula 1 telemetry. Screaming all the way to an 8,400 RPM redline, it remains the only factory production V8 M3 ever built.
GEN V: F80 M3
Entering the digital performance age, the F80 introduced twin-turbocharging to the straight-six heritage with the powerful S55 block. Combining lightweight carbon fiber construction with waves of instant mid-range torque, it redefined track agility.
GEN VI: G80 M3
The current pinnacle of high-tech M engineering. Powered by the twin-turbocharged S58 straight-six engine producing a colossal 510 horsepower, combined with high-precision M xDrive and dramatic visual aerodynamics, it dominates both road and track.
